In 1477, the Duchy of Burgundy is annexed by France. In the same year, Mary married Archduke Maximilian of Austria, giving the Habsburgs control of the remainder of the Burgundian inheritance. Although Burgundy itself remained in the hands of France, the Habsburg remained in control of the Burgundian inheritance, and often used the term Burgundy to refer to it, until the late 18th century.
