Elmont is a census-designated place and hamlet located in Nassau County, New York, in the Town of Hempstead. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 32,657. It is famous as the home of Belmont Park Race Track, the world's largest thoroughbred racecourse and the site of the Belmont Stakes.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²). 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

There are 9,902 households out of which 39.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% are married couples living together, 17.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.8% are non-families. 17.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.29 and the average family size is 3.68.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.9 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $62,511, and the median income for a family is $68,646. Males have a median income of $40,182 versus $35,203 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $22,111. 7.5% of the population and 5.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.3% of those under the age of 18 and 6.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
